Miss Likkle Shop, 2020, 30"X40"

This piece recreates a typical scene at the corner food shop in Jamaica from one of the routes I take to work in the mornings. On this particular morning, what struck me was the way the sun framed the men with a yellow glow as they tussled with each other to place an order at the window. More important than what they were buying, it seemed a spotlight was placed there just at that moment in time. The subjects in my pieces never know they are being observed as they go about their days and live their own stories. Through my work, I see them differently, and I try to immortalize them to live again and again with each new viewer.
